Marine Grade Aluminum Alloy

Marine Grade Aluminum Alloy

Our Marine Grade Aluminum Alloy (predominantly 5xxx and 6xxx series) is the gold standard for maritime construction. These alloys, including the high-performance 5083 Aluminum, offer exceptional durability against pitting and stress corrosion. Designed to withstand the toughest ocean conditions, our plates and profiles ensure a long service life for hulls, decks, and offshore structures.

which means that the global governance system must keep pace with the times,

Technical Principle

Marine Grade Aluminum achieves its properties through the addition of Magnesium (in 5xxx series) or Silicon/Magnesium (in 6xxx series). Specifically, 5083 aluminum forms a natural, dense oxide layer on its surface when exposed to air or water. This layer acts as a barrier that prevents further oxidation and corrosion. In the H116 or H321 tempers, the grain structure is specially controlled to prevent intergranular corrosion, ensuring the material remains stable even when permanently submerged in salt water.

Core Advantages

Maintenance Reduction

Requires significantly less painting and upkeep compared to steel hulls.

High Toughness

Retains ductility and impact resistance at extremely low temperatures.

Recyclability

Highly sustainable material with high scrap value at the end of the vessel's life.

Application Scenarios & Problem Solving

Problem NO.1: Pitting corrosion leading to structural failure in coastal ferry hulls.

Utilizing 5083-H116 aluminum plates which are certified by DNV/ABS for zero pittance in 10-year exposure tests.

Problem NO.2: Excessive weight limiting the payload of offshore oil platform structures.

Replacing heavy steel support structures with high-strength marine aluminum profiles, reducing structural weight by 40%.

FAQ

01.Why is 5083 aluminum the best choice for marine applications?

It offers the highest strength of the non-heat-treatable alloys and exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion.

02.Is it necessary to paint marine grade aluminum?

No, many aluminum workboats are left unpainted due to the material's natural protection, but anti-fouling is recommended for submerged areas.

03.Can you provide third-party mill certificates?

Yes, all our marine grade materials come with certificates from IACS members like ABS, DNV, or CCS.

04.What thickness of 5083 aluminum sheet is suitable for boat hull construction?

For general small boat hulls, 3mm-6mm thickness is commonly used; for large vessels and high-load marine structures, we recommend 8mm-12mm thick plates for better rigidity and impact resistance.

05.How long can marine grade 5083 aluminum last in saltwater environment?

With proper basic maintenance, 5083 aluminum can serve over 20 years in continuous seawater exposure, with far longer service life than ordinary steel and other common aluminum grades.
